The Verdon: A Climber's Paradise

La Palud, Annot, the Haut-Verdon, and lesser-known sites

La Palud-sur-Verdon

La Palud-sur-Verdon in France is a popular rock-climbing destination thanks to its location in the Gorges du Verdon.

The limestone cliffs and deep gorges provide ideal terrain for climbers. The many climbing sites offer a variety of difficulty levels and types of routes. Proper equipment is essential, and the best times to climb are in the spring and fall.

Safety is paramount, and beginners are advised to use the services of a guide.

Rock climbing in La Palud-sur-Verdon offers an exceptional experience in a magnificent setting, but it is crucial to respect the environment and follow safety rules.

La Garde: Le Teillon

After exploring the Verdon Gorges and reaching the end point in Castellane, a hidden gem awaits you: Le Teillon. Nestled near the Verdon, this site features a secluded cliff that presents a formidable challenge. Its appeal lies in its remarkable rock quality and captivating routes, which will delight those seeking an experience beyond the must-visit Escalès.

Originally popular in the 1970s for piton climbing, the Teillon has since lost some of its fame, overshadowed by its iconic neighbor. However, it still boasts exceptional routes, carved along compact walls and spectacular cracks. Prominent climbers have contributed to the diversity of the routes. These route setters have left their mark, offering lines ranging from grade 7 to 8, with a predominance of tiny holds. The quality of the rock is undeniable; some routes have been revisited, such as the “Y” route, which has been transformed into the “Y+Z” version and is now bolted.

Le Teillon remains true to its “old school” style, although some artificial routes have not been rebolted, which has limited its popularity. However, this site is worth a visit for its modern, less-traveled routes. It offers a unique atmosphere of tranquility, thanks to its less-frequented cliff face.

At Le Teillon, you’ll find a unique setting to push your limits, nestled in the heart of an enchanting landscape that’s well worth exploring.

Annot (and Fugeret)

Rock climbing in Annot offers a unique experience and an exceptional setting for climbers.
The massive sandstone cliffs, hundreds of boulders, and unique routes make it a remarkable place for rock climbing.

The site was developed with respect for the environment, in collaboration with other forest users.
Annot has managed to preserve its authenticity and avoid overcrowding thanks to its remote location and the effort required to reach the boulders.

Bouldering problems and traditional routes have contributed to Annot’s reputation as a climbing destination. Some boulders require the use of a rope to climb, and these routes have played an important role in the history of climbing in Annot. The site offers a variety of bolted routes on smooth sandstone walls, as well as long traditional routes. If you’re looking for a unique climbing experience in a beautiful setting, Annot is definitely a place worth exploring.
