While enjoying the train’s rythmic tacataca on the railways, you will be able to contemplate the landscape through the large windows. The terraces full of olive and chestnut trees, the Verdon river and its emerald colored lake, the hilltop villages, the violet touches of the lavender fields, the snowy mountain tops of the Haut-Verdon valley and the cliffs of Annot’s sandstones follow one another. If the journey itself is an experience, the villages of Entrevaux, Annot, Saint-André-les-Alpes, Barrème, etc. are worth a stop.
It was Alphonse Beau de Rochas, engineer from Digne, who imagined linking Nice to Grenoble, via Digne in 1861.
His project will take 50 years to come to fruition.
To adapt to the steep relief, in particular between Entrevaux and Barrème, a large number of works of art have been produced. These bridges, viaducts and retaining walls are the beauty of the line today.
At the level of the village of Fugeret, the route describes an S to gain altitude: the slope is too steep for a straight line. You therefore observe this same village twice.
The distance between the rails is one meter while the standard spacing is 1.435 m. This choice allowed tighter curves to adapt to the steep terrain and thus lower construction costs.
