La fontaine de Taloire

Often, “La fontaine” refers to the drinking trough, the washhouse and the fountain itself. It’s the place where the village gets its water.

On the 1834 land register, the Taloire fountain is already shown in this location, at the foot of Mont Saint-Etienne, slightly outside and below the village. This is the layout most often found in hilltop villages. This is where the springs are.

A well-tank, connected to the roof of the church on the square, completed the layout. But wells are no substitute for running water for all purposes, and they often run dry in summer. The Taloire fountain has a reputation for never running dry, and the water site remained active until direct water supply was introduced in the late 1970s.
