Castellane-en

The Petra Castellana archaeological site is perched behind the Roc. It’s the ancient medieval town of Castellane, now made up of remnants of ramparts, chapel and walls.

The origins of Petra Castellana date back to the 11th or 12th century. In the Middle Ages, it was a fortified town founded by the Lords of Castellane. From the end of the 13th century, the town was gradually abandoned, with the inhabitants preferring to live in the Bourg, where Castellane now stands. Ramparts, towers, church, castle, agricultural terraces! The interpretation trail gives you a glimpse of life in Petra Castellana through the ages.

A project entitled TRA[ce]S (European program ALCOTRA 2017-2020) allows archaeological excavation campaigns to be carried out with the Service Départemental d’Archéologie des Alpes de Haute-Provence, in order to deepen knowledge of the site.
