A legendary trail in the heart of the canyon<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nicknamed France’s Grand Canyon<\/strong>, the Verdon Gorge is the most spectacular of all<\/strong> the gorges. Along 16 km<\/em> of winding paths, hikers can immerse themselves as close as possible to the river<\/strong> – in fact, this is the only itinerary that allows them to descend into the bowels of the Verdon<\/em>. Every year, thousands of curious visitors<\/strong> come to rub shoulders with this giant of rock and water<\/strong>, but once you’re down there, it’s as if you’re alone in the world<\/strong> in the face of immensity. To follow the Blanc-Martel trail is also to follow in the footsteps of the Verdon pioneers<\/strong>. In 1905<\/em>, famous speleologist \u00c9douard-Alfred Martel<\/strong> and his guide Isidore Blanc<\/strong>, a schoolteacher from the village of Rougon<\/strong>, dared to explore the gorges in their entirety for the first time<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In those days<\/em>, there were no marked trails or bridges: only their courage <\/strong>to brave the rapids and impassable walls<\/strong>. To enable you to complete this hike, shuttles<\/strong> link the two ends of the trail, departing from the Chalet de la Maline. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The shuttle allows you to park your vehicle in La Palud-sur-Verdon<\/strong>, and takes you to the trailhead at Chalet de la Maline <\/strong>.
When you arrive at Point Sublime<\/strong>, at the end of your hike, the shuttle will pick you up and drop you off at the La Palud-sur-Verdon parking lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Sentier Blanc-Martel<\/strong> is a true adventure through some of the most grandiose landscapes in the Gorges du Verdon<\/strong>. With its dizzying metal staircases, mysterious tunnels and breathtaking vistas<\/strong>, every kilometer holds its share of surprises and emotions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trail starts at the Chalet de la Maline<\/strong>, a strategic starting point<\/strong> offering a breathtaking panoramic view of the Gorges du Verdon. This mountain refuge is an excellent spot for a last stop before setting off on the trail. Dry public toilets are available. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\udca1 After the start, and during the 6-hour walk, there’s no way to satisfy your cravings. So make your own arrangements before you set off, or find something to do so as not to pollute the trail. When you arrive at the parking lot, you’ll again have access to public dry toilets! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the very first kilometers, the descent is steep and winding, so take your time and admire the view<\/strong>. The trail gradually plunges towards the Verdon, revealing breathtaking views of the limestone cliffs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This first section is pleasant, but quickly puts the knees to the test<\/strong>. At Carrefour des Cavaliers, a 20-minute round trip<\/strong> takes you to a magnificent viewpoint via the Estelli\u00e9 footbridge, rebuilt after the gigantic flood of 1978<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The path then crosses a scree slope equipped with a metal passage to facilitate progress, before beginning a fairly steep ascent. After crossing the Gu\u00e8gues scree, you reach the Carrefour de La Mescla. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
