Génépi Pougnet
TASTING Thorame-Basse-en
For connoisseurs, there’s nothing quite like this famous traditional liqueur, which varies in color from yellow to green, depending on how it’s made. Jean-Jacques Pougnet has been making it in small quantities for a long time, in the most traditional way possible, in his small workshop in the village of Thorame Basse, at an altitude of 1145 meters.
The genepi plant is capricious: it only grows at a certain altitude. He harvests it when it is in full bloom, then dries it and bottles it himself, while his wife makes the labels. A family affair, then.
