Once you’ve crossed the village’s emblematic drawbridge over the Var river, you’ll be transported back to a genuine period setting, with its winding cobbled streets and the remains of ramparts dotted with fortified gates. Each stone seems to tell its own story, a blend ofmilitary epic and rural life of yesteryear.

The town’s ramparts, barracks and watchtowers bear witness to its past as an ancient stronghold on the frontier of the Kingdom of France.

Its rampart walk offers plunging views of the river through the loopholes. Its narrow streets reveal medieval shops, the cathedral, the bread oven and the clock tower. Its many little squares, where time seems to stand still, are an invitation to stroll.

Entrevaux bears witness to a fascinating French military past.

Its 12th-century Château was redesigned by the famous Vauban between 1683 and 1702 on the orders of King Louis XIV. This defensive architecture impresses as much as it amazes, to the delight of hikers and history buffs alike.

💡 VaubanVauban, whose full name was Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, was a genius military engineer of the 17th century, famous for having fortified more than 150 towns across France. A loyal servant of Louis XIV, he revolutionized defensive architecture, designing bastions, citadels and fortification systems that were both highly effective and aesthetically pleasing. His work is now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Since 2023, Entrevaux has been awarded the label “Most Beautiful Villages in France. This village is a must-see, as much for its preserved heritage as for its exceptional natural environment. 🚆 The picturesque option ➝ If you want to add a touch of authenticity to your getaway, come by train with the Chemins de fer de Provence ! This little train runs from Nice to Digne-les-Bains, with Entrevaux at the halfway point. The train winds through mountains, chestnut and olive groves, Provence and the Côte d’Azur. Arriving at the station in front of the village, with a breathtaking view of its ramparts, is already worth the detour.

As soon as you step out of your car or train, you’re greeted by a vision worthy of a movie set: the Entrevaux drawbridge. Built to protect the village from invasion, this defensive passageway, flanked by two imposing towers, offers a spectacular and immersive entry into the medieval world.

As soon as you step through the Porte Royale, the impression is immediate: you’ve stepped back in time. Behind you, the Var river flows peacefully, contrasting with the imposing fortifications that surround the village. And before you, the cobbled streets stretch out like a labyrinth, inviting you to stroll and discover.

💡 Photo tip ➝ Stop on the bridge to capture the view between sky, water and stone, with the mountains as a backdrop.

Once past the imposing entrance porch, it’s time to explore! Entrevaux can be explored on foot and through the narrow streets, where every turn holds a surprise. Here, a wrought-iron sign from an old craftsman, there, an ochre facade with a patina of age, further on, a stone arch leading to a narrow, almost secret alley…

📍 The must-sees :

La Place de la Mairie ➝ The lively heart of the village, this is where Entrevaux’s soul beats. Lined with small colorful houses, it’s perfect for a first contemplative break.

Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption Cathedral ➝ A true hidden treasure, this 17th-century Gothic cathedral conceals a sumptuous Baroque interior. Don’t miss its listed organ, a jewel of Provencal sacred art.

Artisanal stalls ➝ Entrevaux is full of little stores where you can discover a gingerbread artisan, an olive wood jewelry artisan, fruit juices grown in Entrevaux, honey from the surrounding mountains.

And the most emblematic: Secca de boeuf. Secca de bœuf is an Entrevaux culinary specialty, inspired by the dried meat of the Alpine valleys. Prepared from thin slices of beef seasoned with salt and herbs, then air-dried, it develops rich, subtle flavors. Tasted in thin slices with a drizzle of olive oil and lemon, or accompanied by cheese and bread, secca is a true Provencal delicacy.

After this initial immersion in the medieval heart of the town, it’s time to indulge in a moment of sweet relaxation before the climb up to the citadel. Sit on a terrace in the main square, or in a more intimate alleyway, and enjoy a Provençal coffee accompanied by a local sweet.

🥐 A must-try:

The walnut tart, crisp and tasty.

✔ Other little delicacies typical of the south of France.

After this invigorating break, it’s time for the climb up to the Citadelle, an adventure that promises breathtaking views… and some hard work!
